Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network

Many of our RFLA Health Family Physicians take part in the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (CPCSSN) project – see list below. The Eastern Ontario Network is one of 13 regional networks across Canada involved in the project. The CPCSSN was approved by the Queen’s University Health Sciences and Affiliated Teaching Hospitals Research Ethics Board.

WHY?
The purpose of the CPCSSN project is to create a database of high quality, de-identified health information to support better research and improve the diagnosis, treatment and care of Canadians with conditions such as diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease, as well as other conditions.

WHAT information is being collected?
Patient health information about how illnesses are diagnosed, treated and managed is collected, as well as socio-economic information if available. All personal information including name, address, telephone number and family contacts will be removed before the information is submitted to the CPCSSN project database. Personal identifiers are removed from the information before it is stored in a central electronic system by CPCSSN, and used for research and analysis of illnesses facing patients in Canada today.

OPTING OUT of the project?
Patients may request that their health information not be included in the CPCSSN study database at any time by asking their health care provider. Their medical care will not be affected if they opt out of participating in the project.
